Battery Relocation

Relocating the battery can be nice. First, if you plan on running more than one battery- putting both in the trunk can be handy. Also, relocating it allows you to use the battery to balance the wieght distribution of your car.

You would think that a battery doesn't effect your handling much, but it does. Don't believe me? Try this exparament... Get a battery relocation kit (Summit has a cheap one for under $50 USD). Put a battery in the trunk, lose (no box) and run cables to it. With the battery free (nothing holding it in one spot), start driving around, doing turns and such.

You can actually FEEL the battery (moving around) effecting how the rear end handles on turns (note: doing this could spill the acid in a battery- be careful).

'course moving mass and stationary mass effect handling differently... but continueing along...

The battery OEM is right over the driver's front tire, thus making that corner heavier than the other front tire- this is not desireable.

On my car, I originally had my battery relocated to the trunk, ontop of the spare tire well.

However I found that if you don't have a full size spare inside the spare tire well, the wieght of the battery will collapse the cardboard and fall into the empty spare tire well. Solution? 1/4 (or larger- prolly 1/2") plywood.

Alternatively, you can do what I did- and throw the battery and battery box inside the empty spare tire well. If you only plan on having one battery, i suggest you place it in the middle of this area. On my car, its all the way to the left since I plan on getting a 2nd battery box for the other side.

Also note that some battery boxs are taller than the debth of the spare tire well- so if you plan on putting a plywood or cardboard cover over this area- you'd have to either indent it or cut a section out for the top of the battery box.
