The engine mounts on most, if not all FWD Mopars don't hold up all that well. The turbo 2.x's have mounts go often, as due the V6's.
Because if this, it is not uncommon for someone with a beefed up FWD Mopar to replace the mounts with home made, stronger varriations.
The late Gus once said that he had used pieces of wood for engine mounts on his turbo 2.x Acclaim....
In my case, I had very few mods done at the time, and decided to do a burn out up a very steep hill. The idea was to see if I could get the engine to knock while in N/A operation (how badly it would knock in N/A mode would determine how much work I would need to do to prevent knock for boost applications.
Remeber though, my car at this point had all original parts (excluding what I stuck on for added performance, and the windshield....) -including the A604 and about 124,000 miles.
I went and went up the hill, heard a big metallic crack noise, and the car admediatly went into limp mode. I suspected I had confused the tranny or a sensor was bad (stupidity- don't try this at home, as I'm a Professional Idiot!). So I tried going to WOT while in limp mode, confused the TCM, and ended up being stuck in 3rd!
After that, every time I tried to accelerate real hard, the A604 would get stuck inbetween 2nd and 3rd- which was quite annoying as I'd do a fast acceleration, the car would try to shift up, wouldn't be able to, and the car would shudder, make really bad grinding and banging noises as the tranny would try to shift. Sometimes this was followed by limp mode.
So I figured the tranny was just killed.
To make matters worse, in the winter before (this happend in the Spring) I was backing up the car in 6" of fresh powder snow. Car wasn't moving so I went to WOT... speedo went up to almost 100 (MPH)- but I wasn't moving. Damn tires were spinning but not getting traction. Suddenly the tires got traction, and I went back real fast and heard a big metallic explosion.... after that, reverse only worked half the time and made metallic grinding noises when I was in reverse.
Took it to a shop to see if they could do anything to help the car last a little longer so I could save for a replacement or rebuild. They look the car over, and found that all the mounts were destroyed, one bolt going through a mount was broken in half, an other bolt on a different mount was SHATTERED.
Had it all replaced, and the car's A604 problems all disappeared and everything runs good again. I suspect the shattered bolt broke up in my winter stupidity moment (not a morning person, lol). Guess I'll never do that again!
As far as mount replacement goes, you can try the Gus way (works good I hear)- just remeber, the stronger the mount is, the more vibrations you will get in the front of the car from the engine! The OEM mounts are rubber so that the rubber (which is soft) can obsorb up the vibrations from the engine and make your ride smoother and quieter. I hear some larger van and Shelby mounts will work on the 2.5 and 3.3- don't know about the 3.0. Some 3.0 guys add strong epoxies to their mounts to make them stronger. You should/could also go to a fastener shop and buy replacement bolts which are stronger (like industrial application bolts....).
