Studdering or Stalling

Although none of my cars have had this problem (yet), I have noticed it is a common question within emails and message boards.

Basic problem? Car starts fine, you start to move and the car studders and/or stalls out.

Solution? Basically you're having a fuel blockage at some point.

The most common trigger is a clogged fuel filter.

If the fuel filter is new, it could be a dying (or dead) fuel filter.

To test, start the car. At idle (not moving), use a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to determine the fuel PSI. It should be about 50psi for the 3.3/3.8L engines

If it is low at the rail, it is most likely the fuel pump or filter. A bad fuel pressure regulator could make your fuel psi off, however that is unlikely.

If the fuel pump and filter are both fine, than chances are its something with the fuel injectors.

Injectors can rust, burn out or get dirty. In either case, it limits or cuts off the fuel entering a cylinder, and can cause idle problems, stalling or studdering.

Some places can professionally clean fuel injectors, however that is probably not cost effective for an OEM #19 injector used in these engines. New ones can get expensive, so a quick trip to the pick 'n pull maybe worth while. Grab a TON of cheap ones, and you can keep throwing in new ones until you find one that is in good shape.

Also make sure the wiring for the fuel injectors is proberly operating. A bad connection or short may also alter the pulses for an injector, thus supplying the wrong amount of fuel.

Lastly, a bad O2 could cause some studdering, tho not likely.
